Let's give the 1987 FA Cup winning team Honourary Freedom of the City of Coventry. At a time when every Football Fan is remising about the season that has passed, every Coventry Fan is not only thinking about that but much further back than that. The first game they attended, their favourite player ever to grace the hallowed turf of Highfield Road and the best game they saw.
The Micky Gynn Testimonial reminded everyone of the greatest triumph ever achieved by a Coventry City side. To win the F.A Cup, in a game consistently voted as the greatest Cup Final ever, was a massive achievement for those players and gave not only the Fans who travelled down to Wembley the feeling of pride, but also those 250,000 who lined the streets of Coventry.
It is because of this that the Sky Blue Trust feels the Management and Players of the 1987 F.A Cup Winning Team should be honoured by the Council with Honorary Freedom of the City of Coventry. In a day when Highfield Road closes it doors forever lest we forget that day in May when the People in Coventry all sang together.
The Trust Board have approached the Council but were told that "the Council's view in respect of the request to grant the Honorary Freedom to the players is not as favourable as you might have hoped. The current view is that the City Council recognised the FA Cup win at the time in 1987, by way of the official home-coming event, and hosting a civic reception for the management and players at the time to mark their achievements. To recognise the players further, after this length of time, is not considered appropriate." We are asking the people of Coventry to once again stand together and lobby their local councillors, the local media and the Football Club and demand that these people receive the honour they deserve.
